THE ART OF THE WEEKEND AWAY
THE ART OF THE WEEKEND AWAY
Why a few nights somewhere new can sometimes be all you need.
There’s something about a weekend away that feels different.
No complicated itinerary. No weeks of preparation. No need to see everything or do everything.
Just a change of scenery.
A Friday afternoon drive with somewhere beautiful waiting at the other end. A bag packed with a few favourite things. Dinner booked somewhere you’ve been wanting to try. A slow morning where nobody needs to be anywhere.
Sometimes, two nights is enough.
Somewhere close can still feel far away.
We often think travel needs to take us somewhere distant to feel worthwhile. But some of the best escapes are the ones within a few hours of home.
A tiny cabin surrounded by trees. A small coastal town. A vineyard stay. A beautiful hotel in a city you already know.
The destination matters, of course. But often it’s simply stepping away from everyday routines that makes somewhere feel like Elsewhere.
Plan a little. Leave room for the rest.
The best weekends have just enough of a plan.
Know where you’re staying. Save a restaurant or two. Find the bakery worth visiting in the morning. Keep a few places you’d like to see tucked away.
Then leave some space.
For the long lunch that turns into the afternoon. The shop you notice while walking past. Another coffee. A swim before dinner. Or doing absolutely nothing for a while.
Not every hour needs somewhere to be.
Pack for the weekend you actually want.
Weekend bags have a habit of becoming much bigger than weekends require.
Instead, think about how you want the few days to feel.
Something comfortable for slow mornings. Something you feel good wearing to dinner. Good shoes. Your everyday beauty favourites. A book you might actually have time to open.
A few considered things rather than everything you might need.
And bring something home.
Not necessarily something you bought.
A photograph you love. The name of the wine you ordered with dinner. A little restaurant scribbled into your notes. A place you’d return to.
The small details are often what stay with us.
And perhaps that’s the art of the weekend away.
Going somewhere doesn’t always require going far.
Sometimes all you need is a couple of nights, a lightly packed bag and somewhere worth slowing down for.
Go somewhere. Stay awhile. Bring something home.
